The 997 file acknowledgement is an ANSI formatted message which is designed to notify the claim submitter that a file has been received and is formatted according to the ANSI format rules. It can contain format error listings. A 997 simply means a file has been received. It does not guarantee payment. It is like a return receipt from the post office for certified mail.
