Subscribers or SBR segments can occur in two places. There is an SBR segment in the 2000B loop. It contains information about the subscriber only. The SBR segment in the 2320 loop contains information about the subscriber as they are known to the secondary and tertiary payers. The individual relationship code in the second position of the SBR segment, 1069, may have only one value in the 2000B loop, which is 18. This means "self." Any other value in this data element in this loop is an error. The only values allowed are 18 and blank.
The patient relationship to insured or individual relationship code data element, 1069, also occurs in the Pat segment in the 2000C loop when the patient is different than the insured. In this instance the data element may have one of about thirty values. See page 155 of the Implementation Guide.
